242 of 600 Oil Well Fires Snuffed in Kuwait
Reuters
KUWAIT CITY —
Firefighters have put out 242 of Kuwait’s 600 oil well fires since March, Kuwaiti officials said Tuesday.
Retreating Iraqi troops torched about 600 wells and blew up 130 others, crippling the emirate’s main source of wealth and causing widespread pollution.
Four U.S. and Canadian firms have been working to snuff out the fires, and the Oil Ministry is recruiting a host of other firms to join the campaign.
Ministry officials have said most of the fires will be out by March, 1992.
