Alhambra : Group Sues Over Ballot
A residents group backing a Sept. 17 ballot measure to raise funds for a new police station sued the city this week, claiming statements in an opposing ballot argument are false and misleading.
If approved by voters, the measure would raise $74 million through increased property taxes on residents and businesses.
The suit, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that the ballot argument against the measure exaggerates the amount of interest the city’s taxpayers would incur in paying off the bonds issued for the project. The plaintiffs, Alhambra Citizens Against Crime, say they want the statements removed because the City Charter does not provide for rebuttals to ballot arguments.
Alhambra resident Sonia McIntosh submitted the opposing argument and is named as a co-defendant in the suit. She could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
