Long Beach : Planners OK Drug Rehab Center Despite Protests

After lengthy debate, the Long Beach Planning Commission approved a new alcohol and drug rehabilitation center at 1729 Termino Ave.

Residents living near the proposed center, west of Long Beach Community Hospital, opposed the project at the commission’s July 18 meeting, citing congested parking in the neighborhood.

As a result of the public testimony, the commission restricted parking at the center to employees and visitors and told owner Jane Bobeck that the center cannot allow parking by any resident clients.

Bobeck agreed to the restrictions, noting that a shuttle service is already in place and that many of the resident clients do not drive.

Neighbors also protested that clients might be wandering the neighborhood while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but David Urbeck, a counselor at the center, said that is not likely to happen.

“The residents have at least 30 days’ sobriety before they arrive at the facility,” Urbeck said. “I don’t see the disruption of the community.”
