Steffi Graf will fly home today to get treatment for tendinitis in her shoulder and may miss Germany’s remaining Federation Cup matches.

Graf required on-court treatment as she struggled to defeat Canada’s Patricia Hy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Wednesday during Germany’s 2-1 victory in the 32-nation event at Nottingham, England.

“Steffi is taking the first flight in the morning to Essen to see a specialist, who will determine whether she can return to compete in the rest of the tournament,” team captain Klaus Hofsass said.

Top-seeded Spain, the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Indonesia and Czechoslovakia also reached the quarterfinals.

Jennifer Capriati beat Magdalena Maleeva, 7-5, 6-2, and Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Katerina Maleeva, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the U.S. team’s sweep of Bulgaria.

Spain needed three-set singles victories from Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez to defeat Australia.

Graf began having pain in her right shoulder in the second set. It was the same problem that had forced her to pull out of an exhibition event in Frankfurt in May.

“Steffi could hardly lift her arm above her shoulder,” German team doctor Hartmut Krahl said. “She played the match at half-pace. She was obviously in a lot of pain.”

Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia eliminated third-seeded Andre Agassi from the $1.2-million Canadian Open at Montreal, using a strong forehand to win, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in a third-round match.
