Twenty-five people, including five members of government forces, were killed during two clashes between security forces and suspected Maoist guerrillas in the northern Andean province of Pataz, the Peruvian military said.

During a battle Tuesday between army troops and about 200 guerrillas near the Buldibuyo mine in the northern district of La Libertad on Tuesday, 20 rebels and an army sergeant died, a statement from the joint chiefs of staff said Wednesday.

On the same day, a police patrol clashed with guerrillas in the same region near Paccha; four police officers died. The statement did not mention guerrilla casualties.
