Arrest Sets Off Riot by Gangs in San Pedro

Police arresting a gun-wielding gang member at a beach party were showered with rocks and bottles by a crowd of 300 to 400 other gang members late Saturday afternoon, prompting three additional arrests and forcing the temporary closure of much of Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, authorities said.

No serious injuries were reported, although one officer suffered a bloody nose in the melee, said Sgt. James Gordon of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“It was a riot, full-blown,” Gordon said of the incident, which occurred during a citywide gathering of gang members who frequently swim and Jet Ski at Cabrillo Beach. The uproar began just before sundown when an LAPD officer noticed a gang member carrying a semiautomatic pistol, which he threw aside before trying to flee, Gordon said.

About 20 officers were needed to restore order, Gordon said.
