Johnson Runs 4th and Can’t Defend 100 Title in Tokyo

Ben Johnson finished fourth to Bruny Surin in the men’s 100-meter final Saturday and lost a chance to run in the event at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Surin was clocked in a wind-aided 10.03 seconds at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. Atlee Mahorn was second in 10.17 seconds, Peter Ogilvie third in 10.33 and Johnson fourth at 10.42.

Johnson had to run at least 10.30 to qualify for Tokyo.

“Next year, I’ll be doing a lot better. . . ,” said Johnson, 29, who is aiming for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. “I’ll be No. 1 in Barcelona.”

Johnson won the 100 meters at the last world championships at Rome in 1987 in a then-world record 9.83 seconds. But that record and his 9.79 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics were taken away after he tested positive for steroids.
