From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Friends and relatives of Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer recalled his courtly modesty and wry sense of humor at a memorial service for the author. “Isaac was a genius. He was gifted beyond description . . . brilliant and unpretentious,” said Rabbi William Berkowitz, who had known Singer since 1965. The service, attended by about 150 people, was held at Manhattan’s Riverside Chapel. Singer died in a Miami nursing home at 87.
