The number of cholera cases in Mexico has skyrocketed to 234, one woman has died and an epidemic could strike the capital, Health Minister Jesus Kumate said Sunday in the newspaper El Nacional.

It was the first confirmed death from cholera since the disease was detected in Mexico 45 days ago. The 234 cases marked a sharp increase from the figures released last week by the Health Ministry, which reported a total of 66 cholera cases and no deaths.
