World IN BRIEF : MADAGASCAR : Three Opposition Leaders Released

The beleaguered government of President Didier Ratsiraka freed three top opposition leaders from prison, but pro-democracy forces rejected this and other concessions and renewed their call for Ratsiraka to resign. Released were Albert Zafy, prime minister of a self-declared alternate government, and two of his Cabinet ministers. The Indian Ocean island nation has been swept by a wave of strikes, riots and protests.
