A Southeast San Diego woman was killed by stray gunfire Monday night as she was chatting with a friend outside her home, police said.

La Vada Gaile Walker, 35, who lived in the 2800 block of L Street, was lying in the front yard when police arrived. She had been shot in the chest and was not breathing, said Officer Mark McCullough.

Walker was pronounced dead on arrival at UC San Diego Medical Center.

McCullough said that, just after 10 p.m. Monday, Walker had been talking to another woman as two men stood nearby. Witnesses said the men exchanged words with two other men in a small green car.

One of the men in the car then opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon, apparently aiming for the men, McCullough said. Walker was the only person hit.
