S.D. Sweetwater Dolphins Trio Swims to First Place

Amber McDaniel, Shannon Cremer and Tammy Taylor were first Wednesday in the girls’ 13-14 trio competition in synchronized swimming at the National Junior Olympics in Tallahassee, Fla.

The girls compete for the San Diego Sweetwater Dolphins.

McDaniel and Taylor took second in duet competition. McDaniel placed fifth in the compulsory figures.

GOLF

The second round of the 19th Junior America’s Cup golf tournament for boys 15-17 was canceled because of unplayable course conditions at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee. The tournament will be shortened from 54 holes to 36 and concludes today. Matt Bettencourt, with a five-under 67, leads the field.

San Diego’s Jill Wery was beaten by Heather Bowie of Edmond, Okla., 6 and 5, in the first round of match play in Wichita, Kan., at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, played on the 5,997-yard, par-72 Crestview Country Club. Bowie was beaten in the second round.

WRESTLING

Poway High School’s Corey Farkas finished seventh at the Junior World wrestling tournament in Barcelona, Spain.

Farkas, a heavyweight who finished second in the California State Championships, represented the nation in the 32-country international event. He is competing the remainder of the week at the Junior Nationals in Warrensburg, Mo.

SOCCER

The 11th annual San Dieguito Surf International Classic, billed as the largest invitational youth soccer tournament in San Diego, takes place Aug. 2-4, 9-11 throughout the North County. More than 3,200 players representing 216 teams--including five regional and 28 state champions--will compete in an international field that includes teams from Canada and Germany. There are 16 divisions, ranging from under-10 to under-18, for boys and girls.
