New York Acts to Help Rain Forests: New York is doing its part to protect tropical rain forests. Gov. Mario Cuomo has signed a bill that prohibits New York state and its local governments from buying some tropical hardwoods, including teak, mahogany and ebony. “While this may constitute only a small step in saving the rain forests, it is appropriate that government set an example in environmental awareness,” Cuomo said.
