U.S. Investigates Hiring Practices

Share

Two U.S. Department of Justice representatives met with Torrance officials for more than three hours earlier this week as part of a preliminary investigation of city hiring practices, City Atty. Kenneth L. Nelson said.

The Justice Department probe appears to be focusing on the hiring of women and minorities in the police and fire departments, Nelson said. But the officials’ questions during Wednesday’s meeting were wide-ranging, dealing with the city’s organization and civil service rules, he said.

“This is going to be a long, long, long process,” Nelson said. The Justice Department officials said they would return in September, he said.

The department began the investigation after reviewing employment records that the city filed with the federal government.

Department attorney Philip Eure, who is handling the inquiry, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
