Share

Candidates interested in running for one of three open seats this fall on the Orange Unified School District board must file papers with the registrar of voters by 5 p.m. Aug. 9.

Trustees Jeff Holstien and Nancy L. Moore have said they will not seek reelection to another four-year term on the seven-member board. Trustee Russell Barrios has said he will run in the Nov. 5 election and has picked up candidate’s papers, a registrar’s spokeswoman said.

Though 10 residents have obtained papers that must be filed in order to run for the board slots, none of the potential candidates have returned the forms to the registrar, the spokeswoman said.

Barrios and Robert Viviano, a businessman and educator, have expressed interest in representing District 6, which includes downtown Orange.

Potential candidates for Holstien’s west-side seat representing District 2 are David Bergdorf of Garden Grove and Orange residents Daniel Matranga, John McCain and Lawrence Labrado.

Interested in replacing Moore, who represents District 3, the northwest section of the district, are Orange residents Carol Jamieson, Nancy Ann Just, Tom Meiss and Bill Lewis.

The sprawling Orange Unified School District operates on a $103-million budget and serves about 25,000 students in Orange, Villa Park and parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim and Santa Ana.

Board candidates must be 18 or older, registered to vote and reside in the area they want to represent.

Others interested in running for a trustee position may obtain papers from the registrar of voters at 1300 S. Grand Ave. in Santa Ana. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
