Japan Widens Trade Surplus: The stage was set for increased friction between Japan and the United States as the Japanese government said its trade surplus widened sharply in June. Stagnating imports caused by the slowdown in Japan’s economy helped to push up the current account surplus to $6.63 billion from $4.53 billion in June, 1990, the Finance Ministry said. During the first six months of 1991, the surplus widened by 43.2% to $28.93 billion from the same period a year earlier.
