Vintage Sailboats to Compete in Race

Sailboats from the late 19th Century will mix with vessels from the 1920s and ‘30s today in a 17-mile race off Ventura.
The 14th annual Pacific Corinthian Classic yacht race will begin at noon outside the Channel Islands Harbor breakwater. About 30 boats, including the record-holding schooner Rose of Sharon that was built in 1930, will compete in the four-hour race.
Organizers said the race is more fun than serious, but entrants vie for a perpetual trophy cup.
“It’s an elegant race where people with old boats can have a sort of romantic interlude with others who own them,” race spokeswoman Louise Noeth said. “A lot of the boats are still in fine working order.”
Among them are the Ventura-based Los Amigos, a 43-foot schooner built in 1879; Sally, a 58-foot sloop built in San Diego in 1928 for the America’s Cup, and the 70-foot schooner Volunteer, which appeared in the TV series “Quincy” during the 1980s.
