The Los Angeles Clippers return to San Diego in October to play Israel’s champion basketball team, Maccabi Tel Aviv, in the first America-Israel Cup.

The Israeli team was invited to compete in a two-game series by Clipper owner Donald Sterling after the team’s successful visit to Southern California last year.

The game in San Diego is Oct. 24 with a second game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Oct. 27, also against the Clippers.

Sterling will donate the proceeds from both games to the Maccabi Tel Aviv Sports Organization for its youth programs. Maccabi, in turn, will share a portion of the donation with the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Centers and other local organizations and charities. Maccabi will also invite 2,000 members of San Diego’s Police Athletic League to be its guests at the game.

“The primary goal of the America-Israel Cup is to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two countries,” said Sandy Roseman, chairman of the cup committee in San Diego. “It provides an unusual opportunity to see the human side of Israel, as represented by a team that makes it possible for thousands of Israeli youngsters to participate in organized sports.”
