From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The police chief of Birmingham, Ala., was granted paid leave pending his appeal of a conviction on a charge of tampering with records concerning the arrest of the mayor’s daughter. Mayor Richard Arrington granted Arthur Deutcsh’s request and said an acting police chief would be appointed Monday. Erica Arrington was arrested in July, 1990, on charges of inciting a riot in a nightclub district of Birmingham. Some pages of her arrest record were later removed from the police log, prosecutors said.
