Don G. Campbell; Ex-Columnist for The Times

Don G. Campbell, 69, former real estate writer and consumer columnist for The Times, died Saturday night in Phoenix of lung cancer.

Before joining The Times in 1979, Campbell had been business and financial editor of the New York Daily News, the Arizona Republic and the Indianapolis Star. Born in Brownsburg, Ind., he was the author of several books, including “Understanding Stocks” in 1965, a Kiplinger Book of the Month selection, and “The Handbook of Real Estate Investment” in 1968.

Campbell’s national honors included awards from the National Assn. of Realtors, the National Assn. of Home Builders and the National Assn. of Real Estate Editors. He won the Social Security Administration’s 1988 Public Service Award.

He retired from the Times in 1988 and returned to Phoenix, where he continued his weekly “About Real Estate” column, syndicated to about 50 newspapers.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, a son and a daughter.
