Philippine police said they captured the chief of the Communist guerrilla New People’s Army and his wife at a Manila hospital Monday.

Romulo Kintanar was having a medical checkup at the Makati Medical Center when police arrested him, Col. Percival Adiong said in a radio interview.

Kintanar had previously been captured by the military but escaped from detention in 1988.

The NPA, military arm of the banned Philippine Communist Party, has been fighting for 22 years to establish a Marxist state.
