Swiss Tops in Insurance Spending: The Swiss spend more than any other nationality on insurance, outspending Japanese and Americans on premiums, according to a survey. The Zurich-based Swiss Re, one of the world’s largest insurance firms, said that in 1989, the Swiss spent $2,376 per capita on private insurance coverage. The average expenditure in Japan was $2,150; in the United States, ranked third, it was $1,817. Finland, Sweden, Britain, the Netherlands and West Germany followed. In contrast, private insurance coverage in Italy and Spain averaged $400 or less.
