Maintenance Job Leaves Air of Discontent

Work at a county Social Services Agency office in Anaheim was disrupted Tuesday when an employee apparently fed chlorine into the air-conditioning vent, causing many in the building to complain of burning eyes and headaches.

None of the estimated 100 people affected were evacuated, but many had to stop work for a while and go outside, while others left work early.

“It’s not a bright thing on the county’s part” to flush out the air-conditioning system with chlorine during working hours, said marriage counselor Vic Crookshank. “We hope the next time they’ll think.”

Crookshank said clients and employees in the county welfare office on Homer Street first began to notice signs of discomfort about 11 a.m. By 2:30 p.m., employees were forced to prop open doors and take repeated breaks outside to get away from the foul-smelling chemical.

“This afternoon, we didn’t get any work done,” Crookshank said.
