Syria’s Assad

Share

Mark Silverman (letter, July 28) presents Syria’s Hafez Assad as a “brutal” leader. Unfortunately, brutality is the way to eliminate political opponents in most Third World countries. But, meanwhile, Silverman forgets that Assad was the only Arab leader who opposed Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war, while even the U.S. government supplied arms to the Iraqi regime.

In appreciation of the Syrian stand in the Gulf War, the Bush Administration encourages Saudi Arabia to send aid to Syria.
