Baldwin Park : 10 New Police, 1 Code Officer

Share

The City Council voted 3 to 1 Wednesday to hire 10 police officers and a code enforcement officer.

The new positions will be funded by a 3% utility tax approved last month.

The additional police officers, most of whom will be used in the patrol division, will improve Baldwin Park’s police officer-to-citizen ratio, which is currently the worst in Los Angeles County.

A police staffing study released Wednesday recommends that the city hire a 31 officers by 1995.

City Manager Donald Penman said it will take a year to recruit, train and deploy the officers and fill eight vacant positions on the department.

Councilman Herschel Keyser voted against the new hires, and Mayor Bette L. Lowes did not attend the meeting.
