Brazil’s President Fernando Collor de Mello would not comment Sunday about news reports that he and his wife, Rosane, are suffering a crisis in their seven-year-old marriage.

“The subject is strictly personal,” Collor said on television when asked about weekend newspaper reports that he is having marital problems.

Sunday was Father’s Day in Brazil. Collor spent the day with his two sons from his previous marriage, while Rosane Collor was conspicuously absent, Globo television said.

Collor also declined comment on why he had stopped wearing his wedding band.

The state of the president’s marriage has been the subject of newspaper speculation for a week, ever since Collor spent a weekend with his two sons on the tropical island of Fernando de Noronha while Rosane Collor stayed behind in the capital, Brasilia.

On Saturday, Collor and his friends celebrated his 42nd birthday. Rosane Collor did not attend the celebration.
