1-Ton Marijuana Crop Is Destroyed
A ton of marijuana went up in smoke in Escondido Monday as it was torched by law enforcement officials.
The 1,900 marijuana plants--with a valued of $7 million--were spotted by San Diego County Sheriff’s Department helicopter pilots on routine patrol Friday, Sgt. Roy Stamper said.
“It just sticks out like a sore thumb from the air,” Stamper said. “When it’s up and observable, it’s harvestable, so you’ve got to go get it.”
The plants were about 3 to 4 feet high and growing in a remote area south of the Guejito Ranch in Escondido and north of the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Stamper said.
About 30 agents from the San Diego Narcotics Task Force, which includes federal, county and local law enforcement agencies, were involved in the operation to destroy the marijuana, Stamper said. No arrests were made.
