S. Africa Names First Nonwhite Judge to Bench

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
A prominent anti-apartheid attorney of Indian descent has been named South Africa’s first nonwhite judge.
Ismail Mohamed, 57, was appointed Monday by Justice Minister Hendrick J. Coetsee to the Johannesburg Supreme Court, the second highest court after the Appeals Court.
