Trustees of the Santa Paula Union High School District on Wednesday once again approved funds to remove asbestos from Santa Paula High School amid hopes it would be the last asbestos-removal project needed before school begins.

The removal of the asbestos under the floor of the administration building and in the school’s roofing will cost the district $40,000.

This brings to $139,000 the total amount the district has spent removing asbestos since the school’s renovation project began in January. Most of the asbestos was discovered in pipe insulation in attic spaces.

District officials said the asbestos would be removed before the students return in September. Meanwhile, district architect Steve Pederson said the district should not have to worry about finding asbestos after this month.

“We’ve uncovered all we’re going to uncover,” Pederson said. “We don’t expect to find any more asbestos.”

The asbestos was discovered during an estimated $3.2-million renovation project at Santa Paula High School that involved the administration building and science and industrial-arts wings. The district also spent more than $143,000 expended on asbestos before the project began.

District officials say they expect 75% of the cost to be paid by state asbestos-removal funds.
