Supervisors Ask Block to Tell Plans for Reforms

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors Thursday asked Sheriff Sherman Block to report what Christopher Commission recommendations he plans to implement, but they remained steadfast in their refusal to conduct a more sweeping review of the department’s operations sought by the City Council.

A Sheriff’s Department spokesman said that Block had “no problem” with the board’s action because he has been reviewing the Christopher Commission report and was planning to report to supervisors on any recommendations he implements.

Board Chairman Mike Antonovich joined Supervisors Deane Dana and Ed Edelman in requesting the report. Antonovich said: “We have utmost confidence in Sheriff Sherm Block and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Department.”

Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas praised the board for “moving in the proper direction,” but disputed supervisors’ claims that the department is well run and that they should not second-guess Block.
