The Killing of a Mountain Lion
As a dog owner, I feel for the man whose Doberman was taken by the lion (“State Officials Defend Killing of Puma,” Metro, Aug. 13), but to summarily destroy this animal, this natural wonder in our midst, can only help further crush the spirit, what little remains, of the West. What presumably attracted us to this part of the country in the first place--freedom, space, individuality--has been all but annihilated by government-agency and private-sector men who won’t sleep until they finish developing the final, remaining, corners of our wildness--actual, spiritual.
