NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON STATE : Protected Status Sought for Lynx

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An alliance of environmental and conservation groups filed a petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Canada lynx as an endangered species in several hundred thousand acres of Washington state’s North Cascades Mountains. The groups said populations of lynx, a medium-sized wildcat, had been declining due to trapping, hunting, fire suppression, logging and road building. An endangered species listing would severely restrict any activities that could threaten the survival of the species.
