Baseball

Chris Roberts’ single in the 15th inning drove in Jeff Hammonds with the winning run as the United States beat the Dominican Republic, 2-1, to earn the bronze medal.

Cuba had 23 hits, including seven home runs, to beat Puerto Rico, 18-3, and win the gold medal.

Ermidelio Urrutia had three homers for the Cubans and went six for six.

In the U.S. team’s victory, Roberts’ one-out hit ended a nine-at-bat slump, including six at-bats Saturday.

Hammonds, who had three hits, had reached second on a double. He barely beat the throw at the plate.

“I think everybody was getting a little tired,” U.S. Coach Ron Polk said. “We just wanted to get the thing over with. You’ve been playing that long, you might as well force the play. No outs, we wouldn’t have sent him. We weren’t getting too many chances.”

The U.S. team overcame a 163-pitch, 13-inning effort by Dominican starter Felix Nova, who lost his bid for his fourth victory of the tournament.

Reliever John Dettmer gave up three hits and had 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the victory.

Starter David Tuttle gave up four hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Todd Taylor had three hits for the U.S. team, a home run in the second inning, a single in the fourth and a double in the ninth.

The United States finished 8-2 in the tournament.
