MISSION VIEJO : Golf Range Approval Expected for College

Share

After nearly seven years of planning, the Saddleback College campus could get approval for a public golf-driving range tonight.

The college district board of trustees is expected to approve a $2.08-million contract to Irvine-based Culp Construction Co. to build the range on 16 acres just inside the Avery Parkway entrance to the campus, according to William Kelly, Saddleback’s vice chancellor of administrative services.

“It’s an old idea that dropped through the cracks for about two years, but with board approval we’re confident we could have the range open by next June,” Kelly said.

He described the facility as a “unique” design, one in which golfers at 45 stations on two levels at both ends will be 325 yards apart, hitting balls toward each other.

The end closest to campus will be used mainly for classes and golf instruction, while the end closest to Avery Parkway will be open to the public and will include a snack shop, small pro shop and patio area, Kelly said.

Because of revenues earned on the public side of the range, Kelly is confident that it will maintain a positive cash flow.

The district trustees will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Room B209 of the Physical Sciences Building at Irvine Valley College, 5500 Irvine Center Drive, Irvine. For more information, call (714) 582-4920.
