PAN AMERICAN GAMES : The Day in Review

Swimming

U.S. swimmers won five of the six final events, giving them 24 of 32 gold medals--their worst performance in the 40-year history of the Games. The best U.S. swimmers skipped the Pan Am Games to prepare for the Pan Pacific Games at Edmonton, Canada, this week. The United States won 49 of 58 medals overall.

Ron Karnaugh of Maplewood, N.J., won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:00.92, a Games record. Alex Kostich of Belmont, Mass., successfully defended his 1987 title in the 1,500 freestyle by winning in 15:21.36. Susan Gottlieb of Shelbyville, Ind., and Angie Wester-Krieg of Campbell, Calif., finished 1-2 in the 200 butterfly. Gottlieb’s time was 2:12.35. Dede Trimble of Short Hills, N.J., won the 200 backstroke in 2:15.80.

Winning the men’s 400 relay in 3:42.84 were Andy Gill of Orlando, Fla., Hans Dersch of Atlanta, Mike Merrell of Charlotte, N.C., and Joel Thomas of Pasadena.

Volleyball

Cuba won the men’s gold medal with a 15-9, 15-12, 15-8 victory over Brazil. Argentina beat the United States, the defending champion, for the bronze, 17-15, 6-15, 15-6, 15-10.

In the women’s competition, Cuba won the gold medal over Brazil, 8-15, 15-6, 15-9, 15-6. Peru won the bronze with a 15-13, 15-9, 15-2 victory over Canada. It was Peru’s third medal of the Games, all bronze.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Lourdes Medina of Cuba won three of the four individual gold medals warded Sunday and helped win the team gold. Medina won the gold in the rope, ball and club, while Mary Fuzeci of Canada won the hoop.
