Share

Donald E. Pearson, an attorney who served as state superintendent of banks from 1970 to 1975, has died. He was 61.

U. S. Dist. Judge Harry Hupp, a friend of Pearson, said Tuesday that Pearson was found dead in his automobile last Friday, apparently the victim of a heart attack.

During Pearson’s tenure as bank superintendent, when he was responsible for regulating all state-chartered banks and international banks, he was elected president of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors.

Pearson later served as president of Ahmanson Bank & Trust Co. and its successor, California Overseas Bank. The Harvard-trained lawyer then returned to practice, specializing in banking law.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of Alhambra; a daughter, Kathryn Glennan of Pasadena, two brothers and a grandson.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 535 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena.

The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to Quaker Gardens Benevolence Fund, 12157 Dale St., Stanton, Calif. 90680, or to Pearson’s undergraduate alma mater, Swarthmore College, 500 College Ave., Swarthmore, Pa. 19081.
