World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Deaths in Flooding Put at Nearly 3,000

Severe summer flooding has killed nearly 3,000 people, caused at least $12 billion in economic losses and affected nearly one-fifth of the country’s population, the Civil Affairs Ministry reported. Four typhoons have hit southern China since last month. In southern and eastern China, victims are slowly recovering from the disaster. Most railway lines and highways severed by flooding have been reopened, and 70% of inundated factories are operating again, reports said.
