From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Soviet jet touched down on a frozen Antarctic airstrip to complete the dangerous rescue of a Soviet crew from its ice-bound research ship. Perfect timing combined with ideal weather to make the risky landing a success. The Ilyushin-76 was to fly out 172 of the 222 scientists and technicians aboard the Mikhail Somov, which became stuck in a sea of ice more than a month ago. More than 50 people will remain on the ship. The plane delivered food to last three months, when the ship should be able to break free of the ice.
