Coe’s gentleness and respect are remarkable, considering the brutality and callousness toward animals that she has witnessed.

As for Mark Miller’s trotting out Adolf Hitler’s vegetarianism: Hitler was a vegetarian for health reasons, not on any moral grounds, as are many vegetarians today.

The danger of splitting this choice of diet from the reality of inhumaneness and cruelty is obvious in the Hitler example. It can indeed be seen in the behavior of many today who do not associate their diet choices with ethical and philosophical reasoning.
