The Salvation Army is seeking $200,000 in grants from the city of Ventura to transform its social-service building at 155 S. Oak St. into a shelter for homeless families.

The Ventura City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on an agreement with the Salvation Army to develop the family shelter, which would be the first of its kind downtown, said Maj. Eddie Patterson, a Salvation Army spokesman.

After three to six months of design work, construction would begin on a building addition that includes sleeping quarters.

The existing building’s social work offices would be modified to include day-care and counseling rooms, Patterson said.

The Salvation Army also has applied for a $225,000 grant from the state Emergency Shelter Program and a $1.7-million, five-year grant for operating costs from the federal government, he said.

Patterson said the shelter would house 41 homeless families and single women a night. “We had to target somebody, and the families are the ones who have children, and single women are the ones we felt would need it too,” he said.
