Jesus Escobar has been buried. He was killed by gunmen, who were angered that he didn’t have any cash in his shoe repair store (Metro, Aug. 2).

Escobar came to Los Angeles from El Salvador. He wanted to find a better life for himself and his family. He was kind and generous to his customers and neighbors.

His generosity touched people. I remember that he gave me a pair of handmade shoes as a gift. You see, I was his English teacher at Los Angeles Community Adult School.

Jesus’ gifts to people came from his heart. And it is this generosity and warmth that I wanted all of Los Angeles to know. His spirit and zest for life were taken from all of us. I mourn his death along with his family and friends.

People in the Pico-Union district will remember him as a man who loved his family, his work and his neighbors. Jesus was simply a man who cared about people and touched all of us in a special way.
