Catalina Scout Camp to Close
I was saddened to read about the closing of the Emerald Bay Scout camp (“Scouts Out at Catalina: Cousteau Society Will Replace Summer Camp,” Metro, Aug. 17). I have been a volunteer Scouter for 25 years and have been to many Scout camps over the years. I have never been to one that could compare to Emerald Bay. The boys loved it. I remember one year sharing supervision of our charges with now-California Chief Justice Malcolm Lucas.
The Santa Catalina Island Co. argues that there is a need “eliminate the impact of hundreds of Scouts in one place.” For the Girl Scouts White’s Landing, “It is an area that is underused.” The company speaks with a forked tongue. The reason for wanting Scouts out is money.
Cut Cousteau’s mooring loose and let him float back to France.
