FEC Seeks Refund From Sen. Simon for 1988 Campaign
Federal Election Commission auditors are recommending that the 1988 presidential campaign of Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) reimburse the government about $365,000 in matching funds that allegedly were improperly spent.
The biggest issue in dispute is whether Simon’s campaign exceeded spending limits in preparation for the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. FEC auditors concluded that the campaign overspent by more than $1 million in those two states combined, and recommended that about $365,000 be repaid to the government matching fund.
An FEC spokesman said the panel is likely to act on the recommendation this week.
