More Arrests
Four more officials arrested for their part in the failed coup were charged Tuesday with high treason, Tass reported. Those charged can be punished by execution by firing squad under Soviet law. The four are:
* Oleg S. Shenin, a former member of the Communist Party’s Central Committee secretariat
* Vasily A. Starodubtsev, a leader of the Soviet Peasants’ Union and the last remaining member of the so-called State Emergency Committee.
* Valentin I. Varennikov, former commander of the Soviet ground forces and deputy defense minister.
* Yuri S. Plekhanov, chief of the KGB’s guard service.
