Rehabilitation of Pier Delayed

Share

Unexpected corrosion discovered midway through the rehabilitation of Manhattan Beach pier will delay the reopening of the structure by at least a month, pushing the first phase of the project’s completion date well into December, city officials say.

The unforeseen repairs will add $163,286 to the cost of the $3.2-million project, according to a progress report submitted to the Manhattan Beach City Council on Tuesday night. An additional $16,000 has already been appropriated by the council to reinforce the girders at the end of the pier, where the nonprofit Oceanographic Teaching Station plans to build a shark tank.

The first phase of the rehabilitation, which began in late February, is the pier superstructure, followed by the reconstruction of the distinctive roundhouse. The project is designed to recapture the look of the pier when it was first built in 1920.
