Lantos Is Right About Japanese Job Prejudice

Share

Kudos to Rep. Tom Lantos! He has been brave enough to tackle a problem others have been afraid to (“Are Japanese Firms Importing Prejudice?,” Aug. 12).

If Japanese companies are to operate in this country, they must treat all of their employees with the same respect and offer them the same chances for advancement.

I worked as a secretary for a Japanese bank for seven years and was routinely the subject of sexist comments and jokes. I was told on several occasions that “women don’t know anything about banking” and that “Americans are slow.” Unfortunately, I was not in the financial position to quit.
