Boarding schools for poor children--the idea is ripe for our times. The place to begin? Ft. Ord in Monterey.

An Army post’s facilities include sleeping quarters, offices for classrooms, a dispensary for the sick, a movie theater and small stores. Teachers and maintenance crews would fill up apartments and homes in the area.

This idea of boarding schools for poor children was promulgated by James Q. Wilson recently (Part A, July 30). Your article on the dilemma of Ft. Ord’s future (Aug. 25) suggests a solution to finding the proper place to implement this excellent project.

As a teacher I know the frustration of Monday mornings after troubled students have spent the weekend in a messy environment. Drastic measures are needed to help our nation’s neglected children.
