STOCKHOLM : Socialist Underdogs
Sweden will hold a national general election Sunday that could topple from power the long-entrenched Social Democratic Party under Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson. In recent opinion polls, the ruling party has registered only about 35% approval compared to the 43% it took in the last election, in 1988.
Surprises are possible, but smart money is backing the Conservatives, who cite the downfall of the Communism throughout Eastern Europe in criticizing the Social Democrats as yesterday’s leaders.
If they beat the Socialists, the Conservatives will still probably have to form a coalition with other center-right parties.
