ESPN and French Firms to Buy Sports Network: The European Community cleared the purchase of the European Sports Network, Europe’s second-largest sports television network, by Connecticut-based ESPN and two French companies. Besides ESPN, which is controlled by Capital Cities-ABC Inc., the buyers are Generale d’Images, the TV arm of French utilities giant Compagnie Generale des Eaux, and Canal Plus, a French pay-TV channel. The seller is British book and stationery retailer W. H. Smith.
