Envoy to Syria Selected for State Department Post

WASHINGTON —
President Bush said Wednesday that he will nominate Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian affairs. Since 1988, Djerejian has served in Syria, where he was involved in U.S. efforts to obtain the release of American hostages in Lebanon.
